I have a 17HP Craftsman that is about 10 years old. The engine cuts off every time if I engage the blades or put the mower in gear. I have replaced the switches that are controled by the engage lever and the clutch. There is some other kind of electric problem. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance for your help.

RB, On occasion, my safety switch on the stik shift(usually after its been in reverse)will stick. It wont allow me to engage the pto. Check it out and see. Hope it helps.

RB: Starting the mower puts a load on the engine. Does just starting foward in a higher gear also cause this cutout? If so, This says that a load causes the cutout wheather its mower or a start up driving foward. That might be weak coil\spark. A load requires more electrical power under load. If it is only a problem with mower and not the load of moving foward, check switches and belts to mower. G.
