Model 917.254850
1993 vintage
Engine: Kohler CV14S/ Type PS1452
Transaxle: Dana #4360-48

Extremely hard to shift into gear. Sometimes it won't shift. Before having a problem I have on occasion shifted without stopping ( which on this model you are not supposed to do). Took the tranaxle off the tractor & the shifter on it is tight. Tapping it hard with a hammer will shift it. Anyone seen this problem with the transaxle? What parts were needed? Easy to break apart? Thank you in advance

Hey Guys, A good morning to you. I have a Craftsman Dana Transaxle . I have no problems with it but am interested in understanding how it works. Why is it that you are not to change gears while it is moving. Also - - - there is no way to check the fluid level so I assume it only was "greased" when assembled ? Any input would be appreciated. caveman

Have you considered perhaps a lubrication problem?
I stand to be corrected but I believe some of these had a grease type lub and over years seemed to cling in wrong places. Should be a fill hole on top. Run a wire or something in it and see what type lub is there. Also seen some that use 80-90 oil or "00" grease. Maybe be a gaulding problem.

I have a 917.27 with the same problem. Now it is stuck in gear 4 and will not move. The diagram for the transaxle shows no place for oil. I am thinking of taking apart this weekend and taking a look inside. I am fearfull that it may fall into 70 pieces as soon as the housing is removed.

I took the transaxle off yesterday. I took all the star screws holding the casing together. It would not come apart. I am not sure if I should use a mallet or if there is a trick for opening the transaxle. I believe water is getting in from the pully on top of the transaxle. I noticed a lot of rust there and water. Help would be appreciated for priying the axle open. By the way, a T30 wrench and leather gloves is usefull when taking off the star screws holding the casing together.
