Ag type tires-yes or no?

Greetings:
My currently used lawn tractor- well, let's call it a riding mower, is a Craftsman YTV-16. Tractor is a misnomer with these vehicles because they are sorely lacking in traction. Of the 16 hp. available, maybe 1hp. makes it to the ground. Would field tread ag-type tires actually give me some pull with this thing? I will spend the hundred bucks if it would actually turn this mower into a tractor. These "turf tires" might as well be slicks as far as I can tell.

Thanks for your advice,
kevin

I have a FF 18 and it was delivered with turf tires. It took them 2 weeks but the got me the 26/12/12 Goodyear terra tires and I've never regretted it!

More weight, wheel weights or other amount bolted to the rear panel of the tractor between the rear wheels. and this would be cheaper.

Have you considered adding a set of chains?

I have a set of 2-link chains, but don't want to run around with them year-round. I have an 8N with regular field tires on it and these don't tear up the yard too bad like I know it does with chains. I want the same thing for the lawn tractor. I just didn't know whether they would add much bite to a something as light and overpowered as a lawn tractor, hence the tire question.

tnx

Keep in mind that these tires are unidirectional. They work great for forward motion but spin easily in reverse. I have a set of Carlisle Super Lugs on my Craftsman and they make all the difference.

I've got two JD 140s with fluid (windshield wash)filled ag tires - wouldn't mow without them. I can climb some pretty steep banks with them.

Maybe a few stray marks in the yard if its real wet - but they disappear quickly. Beats having your garden tractor "take off" on you going down hill and you end up riding it out. Pretty scary.

I'd stay with WW fluid or anti-freeze. Neither is as heavy as Calicum but you won't be replacing your wheels either. Good luck!

I've got a 140 also. I had the ag tires. The sidewall split on one. I put the wheels and turf tires off my cub on it to make do. Nowhere near the traction. I bought new ag tires 23x8.50-12 4 ply for $29.99 each. Now I got to find some more wheels. The water ate mine up on the inside.

Okay folks, who sells them for lawn tractors? I looked in the archives and found a reference to Gemplers, but I think they're kinda high esp. since they'd have to be shipped. Anybody else?

tnx

Try these places:

www.cedarrapidstire.com
www.millertire.com

You can also get them at places like Tractor Supply. If they don't have the size you want, ask them to order it.

As an experiment, I put a 50/50 mix of antifreeze & water in the tires of an old rider we have (Murray 12 hp). I know it's not that much weight, but seemed to make a LOT of difference.
It was easy to do with the inflator thingie from TSC I got for my Ford 4000.

Just a thought....

I have a friend who has a very steep lawn so on his Craftsman mower he uses full rear wheel weights and ag type tires on the rear. He also weighs about 250. Gets very little wheel spin but it does tread the lawn. He also uses this set up with chains for snow removal. I think all the add on components are Sears.

put some weight on it and a good set of lugs on. dont use calcuim it will eat the wheels. you should be able to get the tires at a tire shop that is where i buy mine for my pulling tractor.
