JUST GOT THE JD 316 HOME AND WANT TO TAKE CARE OF SOME NEEDED ADJUSTMENTS. FIRST,IT CREEPS WHEN IN NEUTRAL, I ASSUME THIS IS A LINKAGE ADJUSTMENT. WHERE AND HOW IS THIS DONE? SECOND, IT WON'T IDLE UNLESS CHOKE IS PULLED PARTIALLY OUT, AIR/IDLE ADJUSTMENT? DECK NEEDS SOME ATTENTION, HOW DO YOU TAKE THE DRIVE BELT OFF ONCE THE DECK IS LOWERED,OR DOES THIS COME OFF FIRST? DO I NEED TO REMOVE THE GRILL? IT SUPPOSEDLY HAS A NEW STARTER BUT ACTS LIKE THE SOLENOID IS BAD, YOU KNOW TURN THE KEY SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE IT TRIES TO START.NO GRINDING OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT.ALSO MOTOR REVS UP AND DOWN SLIGHTLY WHEN COLD AND UNDER NO LOAD, GETS BETTER BUT STILL THERE UNDER LOAD.

If this is the 316 with the twin cylinder Onan, and you have a 316 with the solenoid located AT the starter, you can fix the starter problem by going to a JD dealer, and get AM107421. Its about $22. Its a starter relay kit, that solves that click click until it goes problem. There are instructions in the kit, put its a simple plug in thing. Only wrench is for negative battery cable, (to prevent sparks), and remove the + cable at the starter, and the little 1/4 X 1/2 bolt that mounts the relay to the frame. You don't have to splice anything. The instructions will tell you to drill a hole in the frame, but you don't have to. The wires are long enough you can mount it to the cooling shroud on the head.

The creeping is most likely a neutral linkage adjustment. Don't know exactly the procedure for it, but you can buy a tech manual from JD if you want. Its a pretty thick book, will be very helpful.

IMJMAC - The idle problem you are experiencing, along with the rev issue when cold, could very well be dirt in the carb. You might want to remove it and clean it out.

With regard to the starting issue, I'd suggest you check all the wire connections in the starting ciruit. This includes the ignition switch, starter, solenoid, and the battery. Deere has a kit available that puts a bit more juice to the starter if that does not resolve the problem. Of course, it could be the solenoid as you mentioned.

The creeping could be an adjustment, or it could be a broken pin inside the hydro unit. If it is a broken pin, you'd have a problem with loosing speed uphill and gaining it downhill with the hydraulic lever stationary. The best way to adjust the linkage is to remove the fender deck and fuel tank. There are several different designs used, so it depends on your setup, as to how the adjustment is made. - Dave
