Case 444 Mower Belt Keeps Flipping Over

I have a Case 444 with original engine and mower deck. Just recently (this season) it has developed a bad habit of flipping the mower deck drive belt over (onto its edge) and eventually eating it away. It has gone through three belts already and a belt will only last 4-5 cuttings (1 acre).
The pulleys seem to be in alignment, although the front idlers may be a little low. Any ideas on what to look for or where to start would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Wally.

I just had a problem with my 444 eating a new deck belt. I noticed that one of the deck idler pulleys was moving up and down a lot when the deck was engaged, also that the engine was moving a lot on the motor mounts. I put in a new set of motor mounts, and it now works great.

The above post is right, those units came standard with a heavy duty Dayco belt which had aramid(sp) fibers in it across the wider part. Also check the idler pulley and the adjustment pulley on the mower linkage by making sure there's nota lot of slop. Also the tension spring needs to be about a 10 lb model, not your ordinary hardware model. I adjust the tension untilk a dime (0.125") will fit between the coils which seems to be a good adjustment. This got me about 3-4 years mowing out of the blades and this was doing 3 acres per week all year long. Another item to check is you center spindle, check to make sure the bearings aren't bad. If they are, go to a bearing house and get some heavy duty ones with one seal on them, add a grease fitting to the housing, and install the new bearings with the seal on the outside. Once installed grease and your ready to really mow for it will take less power. One word of caution though, the deck won't shut down as quickly as before since there is less resistance on the spindles. Good luck.

I had the same problem with my cub but my belts would only last about 20 minutes. After looking at another cub(same model and year) I found that the belt was the wrong width. The books said it took a 1/2" belt but it really took a 5/8" belt. Got the right belt and it does fine. I guess sometimes the book is wrong.
