I just had a 16 HP Cast Iron Briggs returned from a re-fix from the Motor Repair Service. It previously broke the rod at the wrist pin end after 30 hrs of service on a complete overhaul, while mowing on my 1.6 acres. They did a another sloppy job on the fix and neglected to torque the 4 bolts in the oil pan reservoir, and consequently 1 quart of oil ran out before I noticed the leak. I tightened the 4 bolts, added the oil to make up for the leak and after a short warm up period it suddenly belched a HUGE CLOUD OF BLUE SMOKE FROM THE EXHAUST for a short time and then cleared up. It ran for a few more minutes and alas another REAL HUGE CLOUD OF BLUE SMOKE FROM THE EXHAUST! I shut her down and loaded her back up for a return trip to the slop shop along with my discription of their SERVICE RESULTS. Now my question for you experts! What could be causing the huge display of smoke at random intervals???

Thanks again for your input!

Don

Your piston rings, piston, or sleeves are messed up. Don't take it back to the repair place. fix it yourself

The only thing I would take back to that shop is your list of complaints and take the engine somewhere else.

did the person at the shop wear his hat with it turned to the side, have 3 teeth in his mouth, and say "i always wanted to work on a briggs&stratton" i really feel sorry for ya ! but not knowing what and how,, they did what they did,, it could be one of several things done wrong !

i think if the valve cover ison upside down or if it is defective it will pump oil into the air cleaner. also a clogged air filter can pull some oil from the valve cover..lucas

I appreciate all of the information and suggestions to help me thru the problem. About the repair shop: I spent $350 on the initial overhaul and they still have my money. I am reluctant to repair it myself or send it to another shop to clean up what I have already paid for. I discussed this with the owner and he has agreed that it was shoddy workmanship on the part of his man and claims he will make it right.
I am a reasonable man and will give him one more chance. Thanks for your ideas and comments.

I'm probably stating the obviuos here, but you may want to see if the owner does any of the repairs - and if he does have him do it. I've taken repairs to guys like old Beavis there, and when I went back to fix what he messed up the first time he managed to break something else.
