I just bought a used GT16 Ariens garden tractor and I was hoping to find out what to look for or what to correct that may be an inherent problem to this tractor. I am unfamiliar with this tractor in general, but it seems to be in good condition and runs well.

Any good or bad experiences, or mechanical tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Wally

I have an S-16 hydro (1974-76). I love it!! I have built a draw-bar for the rear hydraulics and I work it like a dog! I have been offered more than double what I paid for it several times! I rebuilt the engine a year and a half ago and the only problem I've had is a pesky oil leek on the PCV valve cover (I can't get in there with the engine in the tractor). Anybody that says these tractors are junk, doesn't know a good thing when they see it! I keep a 1/2 mile driveway clear in the winter, pull a chisel plow with 2 double discs to work gardens in the spring, and mow an acre of lawn in the summer. So, mine gets worked hard year around. I did have some trouble with it creeping in neutral, but that was a bad bushing in the direction plate on the pump. It cost me about $2 to fix it. If you have any questions, please feel free to send me an e-mail!

Gary, I have an Ariens S-16 and I am having a problem getting the mower to mow high enough that it doesn't scalp my grass. I have 48" deck that appears to be in good shape it is just scalping. The blades are only 2-1/4" off of the concrete garage floor in it's highest position. This just does not seem to be correct. I would certainly think that the cut height would be higher. What height does yours mow?

check to see if your rollers are wore out from the inside out, the other problem I had was that one of the four mounting points had broke off of the deck But it was not noticable until I removed the deck.

My dad use to have one. It was more of a play pretty than a tractor. Could'nt endure hard work like my SS/16 could. Nice tractor to put in the shed and show to your friends when they come over.
Good for pulling a lawn sweeper around with(as long as you don't hit any bumps or flowerpots).

The GT-16's I am familiar with are from the 70's. Great machines. As good of quality as can be purchased bar none. Unless they have changed reciently the new Grand Sierra model is still that same basic tractor. The Grand Sierra has a bigger motor and standard features that were opts. on the older units. Like power steering and rear PTO. The last I checked the same Attachments would fit either unit new or old. These tractors had more features available than any other manufacturer. To name a few. Front, Mid and Rear PTO. Front ,Mid and Rear equipment lift. Disc brakes on BOTH axles. 1" Dia. front axles. Float feature on hydraulic lift. You could lock the deck in the up position and operate front and rear lifts.

Wally I dont know the model but a friend of mine has an Ariens and he has a lot of trouble with the timing belt on the mower deck. Not only are they hard to find here in eastern NC but they break at the drop of a hat. I think he has regrets spending all that money to but that machine.
