Crankshaft problem?

My 12.5 Briggs (#281707-0411) bit the dust. Before dying completely, she began shaking violently. Now when I turn the flywheel back and forth about 4 inches, there's a loud clunk. I verified that the piston is moving up and down the cylinder when rotated fully with no undue effort, it's just like it has 4 inches of slack in it. Do you guys think it's just a bent crankshaft?

ps..I'm no expert on BS engine repair, but I did bring an old tiller back to life that had sat for 15 years prior to this (timing off, every orifice in carb clogged, carbon buildup, bad headgasket, etc.) so I can manage.

Thanks in advance. I have been lurking for some time here, and can apprecicate the knowledge in this forum.

Well, the only thing to do is take the engine apart and look at it! Usually, the connecting rod gets broken, or comes loose, or looses its babbitt, which would give some play, but not 4 inches of play! The rod "boss" in the piston, or the top of the piston, may have broken loose, which would give you some play in the up/ down movement! I assume you have the head off so you can see the piston. You may get by with a new/ used piston, if that is your trouble! If there is a problem with the crank-shaft, some times it can be saved. for help with that, contact me. Also, most engine problems are caused by the "Dipstick" sitting on the seat, and not looking at the one in the engine! Rusty jones
