The Lawnboy lawn tractor I bought at a yard sale worked great for a month then wouldn't start. Got into it today and found that it would fire right up with the aircleaner off. So I bought a new air filter and put it on. Still no start. Took it off. Starts right up. Then I tried it with the air filter on but without the outer foam rubber pre-cleaner. It started but would only run a few seconds then die. I took the filter off again and started it and let it run. It ran fine for a little while then started running ragged. Then it would smooth out for a few seconds then get rough again. I looked down the intake and noticed that gas would pool up in the bottom at the same time it started running rough.

I really don't know my way around these simple little carbs so some basic tips would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you are flooding. Adjust oyur mixture to get it to run leaner. It might also be the solenoid on the bottom of the carb(if equipped)

gas visable in carb means stuck float. Your flooding, clean float; set float so it is level to the body.set jet one and a half turns out

Both responses were stupid. For starters, what engine is it. A stuck float could cause the gas to fill the crankcase, and if it was a faulty fuel solenoid it wouldn't get fuel, or it wouldn't affect the engine.

I have a 17 HP that the float was scraping the side of the bowl and would not let up. Got a new float but that only worked for a year.
