I recently acquired a later model Case 446 with the Hyd. resovoir back by the battery. There is very little control in speed. In high range, it is either very slow (like in low range) or so fast you would not be able to mow grass or blow snow without wrecking. This cannot be normal. Any ideas on potential solutions?

Underneath the dash there is a plastic rub block with the neutral start switch built into it. Remove this and recut the existing grooves using whatever tool is handy. After assembly, to change travel speed or direction, always push the travel lever down before moving and then you can place the lever in any position you want and it should stay there. Another note, use the low range for most work and high range for transport.

Max, the speed lever stays where I put it, It just seems to go either a little, or full bore. Shouldn't there be more variation in the speed?

Yes, there should be a lot of variation. Has the travel spool been worked on to your knowledge? Does the unit have a positive neutral? (With both rear wheels raised, transaxle in low range, engine running, the wheels should not be rotating, if so, check out valve visually or with a flow meter. The system should have 2250 psi and 12gpm at full throttle. Just to make things really clear though, these units won't go as slow as a closed center hydrostatic unit which controls the flow of the pump. I use my 446 to till, scrape, and haul and it goes slow enough to suite me but when tilling it seems to go to fast because the tiller will push the unit.
