A. Where can a person find an explanation between
"hydrostatic" drive and "hydraulic" drive as
supposedly utilized on the Case 444?
B. Are these "hydraulic drive" units as used
on the Case 444 still available either new or used; if so where?
My apologies in advance for what may be a dumb question; I'm new to tractorizing.

They are still produced by the Ingersoll company. For an explanation of how the hydraulic system works on these tractors. Try the web site at w3.one.net/~wduck then click on the words hydraulic drive on the left side column. Good Luck. Jim

The Case and now Ingersoll garden tractors are Hydraulic drive meaning they have a separate pump that runs a hydraulic drive motor on the rearend and is controlled by flow valves.

Hydrostatic uses a piston pump where the stroke of the pump can be varied thus the speed changes. This same variance in stroke can be turned over to the other side to reverse the pump's output. On the hydraulic version is the flow is faily constant and the direction of flow is controlled by a spool valve which is not as well controlled as with the hydrostatic pump unless you go with a flow control valve.
