How can I tell what year my just auqired Cub Cadet 782 is? Why is it red?

IH started painting Cub Cadets red in 1980 to match its line of farm equipment. When IH sold Cub Cadet to MTD in 1981, MTD went back to yellow and white on its Cub Cadets, while the Cubs built under contract to IH were still painted red.

I can't tell you why its red but they are a very good machine. I have one that is an 81 and has the original series l in it. 2000 hrs. I do not know if it has been rebuilt but it hasn't had any problems since I got it 4 years ago. Here's a link that will answer all your needs.
