I have a 102 Cub cadet. These were built from 65-67. The serial number on the tractor reference to april/may of 71. I am perplexed as to what I have. Could someone have put a newer transmission on this tractor?

Pat, be sure you are looking at the serial number and not a casting number. The serial number on most 102s is on a plate on the left rear of the trans case, visible from the back of the tractor. Some have the plate on the left top of the trans case, which requires that you removed the back panel between the fenders to read the serial number. A few very early editions of the 102 had the serial number stamped on the right side of the trans case near the footrest area. On these it will be stamped in, not a raised casting number.

The SN will be just a number on 102, with no letters in it. So if the number you have says R1 or something, that is not the SN.

A SN breakdown by month of manufacture can be found on the Information page at at the link supplied here.
