I've got a 1985 430 JD garden tractor that had a leaky power steering unit. I bought a seal kit for the handsome price of 52.00. When I got the kit it said on a sheet in the package that if you don't know what you are doing, ya better take it to somebody that does, but I thought, what the hey, I've been able to fix about anything that comes my way and, besides that, if I get jammed up someone out there knows what to do. So I put in the seals and reassembled it, being careful to be extra clean. Its back in the tractor and it turns the wheels ok, but it turns a lot harder than it did before I started. There was a replacement seal and spacer in the center of the unit that was supposed to replace the original spacer and seal, but I wonder if that spacer might be too thick. Also, is there a torgue spec on the bolts that hold it together? I sure hate to take it out again. Anybody have any experience with these things? Thanks, Irv

Thank you both for your info. I downloaded the instructions for the repair of the unit and will study through. The unit worked fine before I started on it but it leaked fron under the lower plate. I didn't take it completely apart down to the springs. I just put in the o-rings under the ports, the face seal and spacer inside the thrust bearing. All surfaces are very smooth. This tractor only has 680 hours on it and it doesn't show any wear.
It turns easily when the tractor is off, but when I start it up it turns hard. Any suggestions would appreciated. Thanks again for the help

Irv - The assembly of the hydro ps units is very critical. I've never torn into one, and most likely would not even try. I belive Parker Hannifin is the manufacturer. Go to the link below, select HGF, and then click on SERVICE to download the service manual in pdf format. Good luck. - Dave
