The Bolens 1255 tractors were built for two years. 1255-01 in 1976 1255-02 in 1977 They both used a Tecumseh engine. Model - HH120 Type - 120199E I don't have the other books here with me as far as capacities are concerned but I fill the transmission in my tractor to the fill plug with 90 wt. gear oil (don't remember how many qts. it took) and the engine, if my memory serves correctly, holds 1 1/2 qts. of oil.

Around what year is the tractor? I know in the 70's they used Wisconsin engines.

My dad had a 1400 series Bolen from 1973. It had a single cylinder 14 hp Wisconsin engine. The name plate for the engine was on top of the engine. Maybe yours is missing that plate or it is a different engine. We used that tractor for 26 years. Loved that hydrostatic drive.

You have a Wisconsin S12-D it gives you 12.5 hp, and you can get parts from WIS-CON total power corp. they still manufacture parts for the engine.
take a look at the set-up of your drive shaft, so if it were to break you would know what you have.
I have an original engine manual that i can copy.

The S12-D wisconsin was used in the 1250 models and they were a totally different frame tractor than the 1255 and the S12-D will not fit on a 1255.
The 1250 has a channel iron frame and the 1255 has a tube frame and your wheel base is considerably shorter on the tube frame.
