I have a 2 year old craftsman riding lawn mower with a 12 horse power single cylinder Briggs and Stratton engine A couple of days ago it started running rough and died under power. Now it is backfiring and blowing white grayish smoke from the exhaust. When I can get it started it runs rough and backfires and then it dies. Does anyone have any ideas.

i think that one or more of your rings are stuck closed meaning to tight to cylinder?

there could be many things rong, it could be the rings because extra oil could be getting into the piston and might be getting burned. The only thing that seems odd about that is that it happend so sudden, rings usually dont just go, they go gradually. You could also be getting dirty fuel, but that is not very likely. If it is just a 12 horse then you should take off the head and check it out. It is not very difficult and i dont think it would do much harm. if the walls of the piston are kinda scratched and have lines in it then it is a oil problem. I know that if in a two stroke engine that if the oil and gas are not mixed enough the exhuast will be white, so my money would be on the rings cause the oil is burning. \

Please email me back if you find out the problem

A blue/black is oil smoke, it would be fogging the neighborhood if it were rings running like it is. A backfire is a timing problem regardless of oil quantity in the cumbustion chamber. Worn piston rings and scard cylinder will still run fine once it's warmed up, it'll blow smoke of cource but it'll run without backfiring.

Check the points first if it has points. Look at everything that has to do with firing the spark plug. The worce thing that could have happened is the keyway for the flywheel sheered and let the flywheel slip just enough for the timing to get off several degrees. Actually this would be the most likely thing if it were my mower...Anyway, to get at the flywheel a few things have to come off. The pulling the flywheel off is the next problem but, if the nut came loose in the first place...the flywheel could be loose and let the keyway get sheered. A clogged carburetor jet could be the culprit also. Take the fuel bowl off and check for a lot of sediment. Clean it up and your back in business. Take the flywheel advice as a last option unless you hit something big with the mower and it stopped the engine hard. Guarentee that will sheer the flywheel key. Hey good luck. Let us know what the problem was would you? Thanks.

Replaced spark plug runs fine. Why would a bad spark plug make the engine backfire. To me it would seem like a time problem thanks

Hit and miss fire. Bad plug can make it seem a major problem. BTW use quality plugs. About 4 bucks.not cheap taiwanies. They wont last.

Could be as simple as spark plug. Seen this before.

That white gray smoke could be oil, the rings may be going bad or a valve problem.
