Bolens snowblower gear changing problems...

Hi,

I just got a Bolens 8hp 32" snowblower. The five forward and one reverse gears were working fine the other day. Today I went to go use it for the first time and I was having trouble changing gears, and it didn't even want to go in reverse... It was much colder today, could that be the problem? Do snowblowers have a gearbox of some sort, is there gear oil in it? Or does it work with belts? I have no idea how it switches gears. Any guidance on how to tune up the drivetrain/gearbox would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Stan

Did you find a solution to your predicament with the Bolens'? I am having the same problem with mine and have tried the things suggested by teeg but still have not figured it out. How thick is the rubber on the wheel and how do you know if it needs to be replaced? Also is the wheel suppose to be actually touching the bottom pressure plate because I have about a 1/4 inch gap between the two so the wheel never actually contacts the pressure plate.

Remove the bottom/rear cover on the machine. Most walkbehind snowblowers have a rubber drive wheel that rides on a metal one. This is your speed and direction control. If the rubber wheel wears, it doesn't work as well, and sometimes an adjustment will work, sometimes a new rubber wheel is needed.

Also make sure the wheel can slide freely on its shaft. Don't get any lubricant on the metal or rubber wheel surfaces.

Some models do have a gearbox. Also check the belts. There are two of them. one drives the wheels, the other drives the blower assembly. Check the condition of them, and the tension on them.
