I lost a rod in a KT 17 about 1980, and the series II cost $1,013.oo THEN...and I installed it... I think I would buy a GOOD used mower with a good series II in it... I got a good new Big Bore Onan short block for $150, at an equipment auction....That is a good Power House.!! I ported it, before I put it in..!! The Series I Kohlers have no pressure oiling.....Dippers on the rods...like the pre 1952 Chevy 6's...Nobody builds them, either...!!!!!

Kohler does not recommend it. Though I suppose you could. The Kohler bulletin recommends a Series II short block for all Series I engines that need rebuilding.

See the link for a replacement KT-17 for yer tractor from Jack's Small Engines. You might also inquire about the Magnum 18, which is pretty much a drop-in replacement engine, too (I prefer the Mag 18).

A short block includes all the internals in the block. You re-use yer old engine's tin, carb, flywheel, etc. You might inquire at Jack's about those, too.
