Any tips on getting the longest life out of a series I Kohler?

I,m sorry I don,t want to beat this suject to death,But does any body have any advice for me on getting the most out of my KT17 I.Like oil,synthetic?Weigth I keep it in a garage.Starting.Somone said run the oil alittle over full.Somone said don,t!Should I consider putting a new oil pump on it.? Are ther additives to use?Ect. Thanks

Dave,how old is this engine,20,25 yrs?The way I see it,rebuilt properly,cared for, you should get the same sevice,that would make us very old men(me anyway).You also know this engine does not like prolonged periods on steep inclines so you can take this into account(I would have to travel with it to find a hill).Kohler makes excellent engines,maybe this one deserves a better rep.after all it has lasted this long.Just my opinion.

Rather than start an argument with people who don't seem to know anything about this engine I will recomend you get in touch with a Kohler area rep. They can explain everything you need to know and what to do to make this engine last. You will be amazed at all the miss information from people on this site concerning this engine.

All I will say on this is, Kohler Engine had big problems with these Series I, within about 3 years if memory serves they had pulled all remaining Series I stock and introduced the Series II, and they had a bulletin out to servicemen that rebuild of Series I was not recommended, that they were to be replaced with Series II. Kohler warranteed a number of Series II swap-ins. Those are the guys who made them. That said, there are a number of Series I still in service, in garden tractors largely in flatland areas, or in use on pumps, etc., where they run at a constant speed and are kept level. Series II is the better engine.

The only aftermarket parts I know of for Kohlers are for the K-series engine.

Well, my advice is to not run it on anything but flat land. Keep the oil at full, not over full. If you over fill an engine with oil, the crankcase pressure will blow seals out thus losing oil that should be slinging around lubricating internal parts that will cause premature failure of the premature failure engine you have anyways. You should use SAE 30 like all other air cooled small engines. If you could replace the oil pump, I would. But this motor doesn't have a pump, that is why they are junk!

They do have a pump according to the tractor manual I found in the Library.Its a pressurized spray system,run through a hoolow camshaft and squirts out two holes that shoots down on the crank & rods.The rod caps have holes in them the oil gets to the rod bearings though the holes.And I can imagine that this is where the problem starts.

The Series I DOES have an oil pump. The main bearings are pressure oiled, but the crankshaft is not rifle drilled to the connecting rod journals, so they are splash oiled rather than pressure oiled.

In spite of this, a lot of those engines lived a fairly long life when kept filled with quality oil, and also, it is very important to keep the cooling fins and shrouds free of debris for efficient cooling.

I think you can still get pistons, rings and rods, perhaps from aftermarket to rebuild if necessary.
