I'm looking to purchase a 147 cub cadet. Seems to be in good condition other than a slight knock in the engine at idle. Dealer asking $750. Does this seem to be a fair price for this age of mower. Any other information available on these tractors would be appreciated. Thanks.

Bill, you need to check out the source of the knock. Sometimes the front PTO clutch will knock inside the pulley case where it rides. This is normal, and often happens if the 3 little anti-rattle springs are not present (you can see them as 3 clip-looking things between the clutch fingers and the starter pulley housing).

You do not mention whether the 147 has any of the following options, which add value: ammeter, lights, wheel weights, rear hitch assembly, cigarette lighter, hydraulic lift.

You also don't mention what size deck it comes with.

Persdonally, I think $500 is more fair for an average condition 147 that runs good, does not smoke, has at least a 42" deck with it, and maybe has one or two of the options listed above. You might wait til the middle of January and try to dicker then.

By the way, you are buying a garden tractor when you buy an IH Cub Cadet, not a "mower," so please don't compare it to rider mowers. There is a world of difference in the toughness!

Thanks for the info Jim. This tractor is in very good condition besides the knock. It's equiped with a 48" deck, ammeter and lights. The hyd. are real good . Has a lever to lift the deck. I'm going to try and get him down in price.

750 would go a long way toward a new mower with every thing new and no knock
