Was power steering an option on the 1250 Cub Cadet? If so, does anyone have, or know of, a unit for sale?

No, it was not an option on Quiet Lines like your 1250. Installing PS from a later model can be done, but it will take some engineering to get it all in there.

Thanks for the feedback Jim. Suppose I'll keep my eyes open for potential options. My 70 year old Mother enjoys mowing lawn with it, but it's getting hard for her to steer.

If you wanna stay with Cub Cadet, look for a used 982, 1864, etc. with PS.

If you want options for her to steer easier with what she has:

-- Use ag tread front tires for wide rims like you have, or use narrow front rims and tri-ribs. Easier to steer.

-- Keep them aired up hard.

-- Be sure the ball joint ends are all good and there is not much play in them.

-- Be sure the steering box is not excessively loose, and that it is regularly greased.

Jim, I do have substantial play in the steering box. Is a rebuild kit available or do you need to go through it piece by piece?

It may just need to be adjusted. Follow the drag link from the steering spindle to the plate on the side of the steering box. There is a cam follower in that plate...it looks like a slotted bolt with a lock nut on it. Loosen the nut and turn it in a quarter turn. Tighten the nut, and see if things aren't better. You can access it to turn it through holes in the frame.

If it needs a rebuild, yer Cub Cadet dealer will have all the parts you need to rebuild it. It is best to have a service manual to guide you through the process. The service manual for yer tractor is available from Cub Cadet at 1-800-8007310, they will deliver one to yer door, and it is not too expensive and worth every penny.

Also, be sure there is not excessive play in the ball joints. You can buy replacement ball joints at a dealer or as MTD parts at Lowe's, TSC and Farm & Fleet.

Thank you for the suggestions Jim. I'll have time to experiment with it over the holiday.

I have to go to the Chiropracter after I plow snow with my JD 210, and I'm not close to 70 yet. The JD 445 is the lowest-cost option right now, since the 345 has power steering and hydraulic lift but no hydraulic down pressure. For that kind of money I can hire someone to do it.
