I have/had a 2002 Cub Cadet 2185. While mowing
my lawn recently, the 2185 caught on fire and
burnt up before I could get a fire extinguisher
and put it out. Has anybody heard of this happening to any other Cadet 2185's?? My homeowners will pay for the tractor, but I don't know if this is a common occurence with these units.

We also have had this happen with our 2185 on 3 different occasions. Cub Cadet states that we did not keep it clean but, we have been extra careful in keeping it free of any grass. Oh, but wait we are talking about a lawn tractor. Nice to know I am not the only one facing the same problem. Is there any recourse as of now?

I have had nothing but trouble with Cub cadet 2185 Overheats ( melts the headlights but hasn't caught fire yet) The drive belt for the deck breaks about every 10 hours use. First of second year, Cub cadet dealer charged $750 to get started and replace rear seals [ without getting prior approval] Third year, replaced fuel pump, filter, before it would run. Had to replace clutch ($350) Bent push rods ($175)
It is VERY unreliable.

How did it bend the push-rods?

I nearly had this happen to me. I have been having a severe overheating problem with my tractor for 2 years. Cub dealer unable to diagnose the problem. Last winter while doing some routine maintenance on the machine the fuel line from the tank to the engine fell apart in my hands. Luckily this didn't happen while the engine was hot or I would have lost the entire machine in a gas fire. (perhaps it would have been better had it burnt up, I could have collected insurance money) Apparently the heat from the engine crystallized the rubber tubing. I have since replaced the line but the overheating still occurs. It sounds like this is what happend to you. I am not buying another cub.

If you were mowing in thick leaves they will collect around the muffler in the front of the mower and will catch on fire. I had it happen but was lucky enough to get it out quickly with no damage.

Was it a gas leak fire or something else?

Not common for them to catch fire. In some instances, grass and debris can collect around the muffler and catch fire if the owner neglects maintenance and does not clean the machine. Regardless of what brand machine you mow with, it is important to check it over to make sure grass and debris is not collecting around the engine shrouds and muffler.
