I'm changing the fluid in a Colt Super 10 hydrostatic transmission (10hp Kohler engine), and was wondering what I need to put in? The label is not readable, and I've gotten answers from different repair and tractor supply shops of Ford ATF, clear hydraulic fluid, and 20W-50 motor oil. Also, how much is required to refill? I've drained about 4 quarts, but am not sure if it was low to begin with or not.

Thanks for the help!

The recommended oil for the Colt Hydraulic Drive is Shell Rotella 20w40 motor oil, what you are going to find in the stores now is 15w40 which will work just fine, the 15w40 will squaak some in the winter time until it gets warm, if you are going to use it in the winter time, what they recommended was 10w, be sure to clean the screen in the left fitting in the rear axle, as you are sitting on it, it will take a lot more than 4 Qts, I like to fill them to 2 3/4" from the top of the filler opening on top of the rear axle.

Jim,

Thanks for the info. Sounds like 10W for the winter plowing, and then 15W for the summer. At the very least, it will get an oil change twice a year. Concerning the screen in the rear axle, what is involved in cleaning this? I don't have a manual for it. Do I have to remove the wheel and remove an axle cap? Thanks!

All you need to do is take off the steel line off of the left side and unscrew the fitting the steel line hooks to, soldered to the fitting is a screen and thats what you need to clean, on some of the newer tractors the screen is on the right fitting.

What you might want to try rather than changing oil twice a year is use 5w20,5w30 or 10w30 and try it year around, I did that on a Case 195 that I used mainly in the winter and it worked fine, on that one I had used Valvoline 5w20, as you will need close to 11 Qts.

Thanks for the info, Jim. I didn't realize I would be using that much fluid. I'm glad I found this board!

Someone recommended Rotella T 15W-40 to me. What is the difference Jim D?

I don't really know what the difference is, if you have some Shell Oil Distributors in you area, they should be able to tell you, one might supercede the other or it may be for a different application.
