My 15.5hp Kohler engine can't keep a battery charged. I replaced the stater and several batteries, but the batteries still go dead after several hours of use. My mechanic says that Craftsman added the electric clutch to this engine without upgrading the charging system, so the charging system cannot keep up. Sears only recommends that same stater replacement. There is no voltage regulator or diode on this engine and it is stock from craftsman. Does anyone know of an upgrade or how this can be corrected? Thanks,
Charlie

HI, IF YOU HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE, AND AN AMP METER,YOU CAN CHECK OUT HOW MANY AMPS THE ELECTRIC CLUTCH WILL PULL. IF IT IS ABOUT THE SAME AS THE AMPS FROM THE CHARGING CIRCUIT, THERE WILL NOT BE ANY LEFT TO CHARGE THE BATTERY.
IF YOU RUN THE ENGINE WITH THE ELECTRIC CLUTCH OFF, YOU SHOULD BE CHARGING THE BATTERY. MOST RIDING MOWERS HAVE AN AMMETER ON THE DASH. IF NOT, THEY ARE INEXPENSIVE, GOOD LUCK.

The Kohler should have a pretty good chatging system, either 15 or 25 amps. do the following test.

with the motor off check battery voltage. should be about 12.6-13.0 volts fully charged.

Now start the motor, but do not engage the electric clutch. Now measure the battery voltage again. It should be about 13.8 to 14.8 volts if the engine is charging the battery. If it does not read higher with the engine running then the charging system is not working properly. Have it repaired. I cannot believe that sears would sell a mower that would not even run a day without the battery going down.
