I would like your opinion. I currently have a 1993 JD LX188 with 38" front snow blower, chains, and 4 rear weights to use on our long black top driveway. This set up works well in the deeper snows of 6" - 12", but we do not get that much very often, and if we do, I have larger equipment to handle it. More common here lately is 2" - 3" of snow with bitter cold temps after it. I like to quickly plow off the drive way so that the hot sun can work to melt the remainig ice. The snow blower does a good job at removing the snow, but it always leave a light layer of snow to get packed down. I think the blade would do a better job at removing the snow down to the black top. I am also concerned that a 42" front mount snow blade would not be wide enough on this 38" wide tractor, or that the front of the tractor will not have enough weight to steer itself and get pushed around by the angle of the front blade. I would really appreciate your thoughts, opinions, and mainly your experience. Thank you. Philip.

There should be adjustable shoes on the thrower to adjust height. Raise these and you should scrape down to the pavement. Myself, I prefer the thrower because every few years we get a lot of snow and with the blade you need a lot of room to push the snow to so as not to run out where as with the blower it doesn't matter as you are throwing the snow away from the drive. Also, my snowdrifts aren't as deep with the blower as they are with a blade.

I have a BOlens with a 42" blade and it works very well. The tractor is 36 or 38 wide and no problems to speak of. The blade is nice to have to scrape off the drive.

If your tractor has provisions for some form of rear 3pt you might consider a rear blade added to your front blower. Front blower to take most of the snow off and rear blade to scrape clean.
I have found this to be the best set up for me.

I had a 42" blade on my Ford LGT125 (12HP) which worked well. I have since adapted a 48" blade to it and it works even better. I've got wheel weights, CaCl in the tires, a weight box and chains. I can plow 6"-8" snow without any problem at all. It will actually plow much more than that but I have a 20' wide 1,000' driveway and after about 3 swaths, I've got a large snow bank built up and I'm pushing a lot more than the original 6" to 8"!! When the going gets tough, I use my LGT145 with a 42" 2 stage thrower and when the going REALLY gets tuff, I bring out my Allis WD with a 6' snow bucket. I like the 48" blade as it throws the snow further off to the side when angled so the wheels don't tend to run in the turned snow as much. I like the blade because you can set the shoes up and scrape right down to the driveway surface.

Iam not sure if your blower has and adjustable shoes or scraper blade on the under side of the blower. But if it does and you don't want to spend the money (I suggest a 48" blade) set the shoes higher so the scraper blade get down to the surface to clean better as long as the auger doesn't rub the ground this will wear auger. If it did a good job when new then your scraper needs adjustment or replacement most are adjustable. For light snows a 48" spring trip with replaceable scraper would work best and let the scraper rub smoth blacktop clean and it will be perfectly clean if not driven on first. Another thing that helps snow blowers/blades is put a real good coat of old candle wax on all the faces of the blade and the interior inside of the blower and blower fan and discharge chute. Keep plenty of wax on and it works dreams.Snow slides better.
