Got a David Bradley with a little 2 hp engine. I'm impressed with it's guts and would like to haul some firewood up the trail out of the ravine on my property. Problem, It doesn't appear to have any brakes. how do I keep it from running wild down the hill?

I have a trailer that I pull behind a Planet Jr. 2 wheeled tractor. I ride on the trailer also. What I have done is put brakes on the trailer. It's just a piece of wood with rubber on and a lever to be able to make it rub on the wheel to brake it.It works fine. Hope this helps.

Generally speaking, lawn and garden tractors, 2 and 4 wheel included, are not meant to haul trailers. Their "brakes" are frankly somewhat vestigal. On level ground you may get away with pulling a very small trailer (carry dirt, garden supplies, etc., in low gear) but anything heavy with wheels is trouble. Tractors are meant to pull implements. David Bradley has ratcheting hubs, no way to put brakes on it. With those big handles, sitting on something being towed behind it over rough ground may have you singing a different tune!

It may surprise you to learn that riding sulkies and hauling carts were factory furnished accessories for the David Bradley walk-behind tractors. Another accessory was brakes for the tractor. YES, it is possible to put brakes on those tractors! By throwing a lever, a wooden scrub brake pressed against each tire. Not fancy, but it worked. Ratcheting hubs mean nothing. If the tires can't turn, the tractor can't move.
