Need help, the motor runs until battery goes dead, charge the battery and it will run again. How does the battery get recharged. No generator visible on motor, Is voltage regulator bad, I'm not the best at this but would like to get it running without a lot of expense. 1975 Ariens S-14 Engine: Kohler No. 321-S 60238

Unit uses an alternator under the flywheel. The
regulator is the finned alum box around the dash.
To check out the system locate the two wire plug around the starter area. Unplug , run the engine at full speed and check for 28 Volts AC NOT DC. Voltage will vary from 24 -30 and be Ok. No Ac? bad alt. Do have AC? go to regulator and check same two wires for AC volts there[ of course put the plug at the engine back together]. AC there? One more check. make sure the wire from the start switch [ the two ac wires will be one color, the other wire 12 volts DC will be a different color]
is not broken or the fuse is blown. The regulator needs 12 volts to operate. So if you have AC volts from the alt and 12 volts from the start switch back to the regulator and NO charging then replace the regulator. If you jump start the tractor in the future, pull the plug on the regulator. I know some will read this and never had a problem but many people have burned out regulators during a jump start.
