A year after rebuild the kohler 341(16hp single)has started to knock.A new short block is $1700 cdn.I can get a new 16hp vanguard for $1100.It's for a jd300 and would take some work.Would the vanguard work as well as the kohler? What would you do?If it was a 18hp it would be an easier decision, but it's not.
thanks
Al

I repowered a Deere 140 with a Briggs Vangard VTwin - 18hp. A very successful conversion. I wrote up a description of the entire project. email me your address, and I'll forward a copy to you. (and anyone else who is interestsd!)

You already did,Ray,and I thank you again, that is why I would jump at this deal if it was the 18hp,it seam to be the best match, concidering torque,hp&phisical size.
Thanks

Thanks for your comments guys. although the vanguard is a great deal at 11oo cdn,I think it is just shy of what I want.I hope I can find such a deal on a 18 vanguard or honda before the kohler gives up.
Thanks
Al

18 HP BS Vanguard is exactly the same outside dimensions as 16 HP BS Vanguard. Have installed several 18's in Deere 140's and 317's. More power with less gas than original engines. You can get Vanguards with the same size 1" output shafts the Kohler originals had. I'm not sure about the distance from C/L of crank to base on the 341, but when replacing the 301's or 321's with the Vanguard, the Vanguard shaft C/L is higher, so on the 140, "U" joints were needed in the driveline, instead of the original flexible couplings. Also, you needed a longer snowblower or mower belt.

I custom-modified the Briggs exhaust systems, so the exhaust would some out the original hole in the hood support.

The 300 would have used a battery ignition system with breaker points, and the Briggs is magneto with electronic triggering, so the ignition switch would have to be changed, or a relay added to the existing system.

As you may know, there is a website selling Kohler V-twins for some of the Deere tractors, complete with the parts needed for conversion. As I understand it would be inappropriate to list the site here, email if you need an address.

Seen a vanguard in a old bolens, and seen a john deere 140 with a 24 hp honda vtwin, so I guess it could be done.

I know it can be done, but the torque curve of the vanguard concerns me,it does not compare well to the k341,so I think I will pass on this deal and wait on deal on a larger engine. What can you tell me about the honda jd?The 140 is simular to my 300,and I like the honda but it looks like a tight fit,did the frame or hood get butchered?
Thanks
Al

The honda powered 140 was on e-bay last month. From the pics it looked like a clean looking conversion. The drive shaft was all set, but needed some small details done. It had dual stacks running up each side. Looked to be a tight fit. I have a vanguard 18 hp in a JD 235 and like it very well Whats up with this torque curve thing ? Your going to run out of traction before power anyways.

This was a topic week before last (except repowering a Bolens). Follow the link below to see the discussion, and maybe you small engine experts can chime in about the techical details. All I know for sure is that I love the way my long stroke, big bore cast iron single cylinder Wisconsin performs and would hate to trade it in for a newer engine that falls flat on it's butt as soon as I need some grunt out of it.

Thanks for your comments,as far as the torque thing, the k341 has about 15% more torque than the 16 briggs, and the snow lately has been causing it to struggle. If I take the plunge i do not want less power.Btw,I have single space v bar chains & 100# on each rear wheel,it almost never loses traction.
Thanks again
Al

You won't get the torque out of a new replacemnt engine that your old Kohler can produce.

Friend of mine has a 16hp 341 for sale. Took it out of a commerical golf course sprayer. That would be the way I would go,look for the same replacement. I agree with Ben in KY, you won't get power and tourge out of the Vanguard as an old 341. It just isn't there. I have a 14hp in an old Economy an it just doesn't give up. Good luck
