Hi all, I'm considering buying a cub 122 in decent shape, Not pretty but decent shape! It needs the drive shaft plumbed and maybe a little clutch work. it comes with a 42" front blade and a 48" mowing deck. I would use it for mowing and what i'm wondering is how did these older mowers do? I have hills in my yard and such and am wondering if when you go over the smaller hills and such if the mower will just scalp off the grass or will float over it as the newer mower decks do? would you guys recommend to just get a newer one instead? Any advice or input is appreciated. Thanks!

Mark, got your email and read it over. Looks like it is a later model, has hook on end of clutch. They started this series with ser# 127161 in 1965 and ended with 218009 in 11/67. As far as the clutch, sounds like the throwout bearing is getting old plus the driveshaft will probably have a bend in it(this is real common). I make my own shafts out of 304 stainless steel because new shafts here were $40. I buy 20 ft of it for $60 and make 8 to 10 of them. Tractor looks average in condition and would sell for between 250-350 bucks here. Heck i've bought them for $75 to $125 just 3 years ago. On the mower deck, on the outlet there is a rise. Early decks had about a 3/4 inch rise and was not a quick attach, while later decks had about a 1 1/2 inch rise and all I have seen were quick attach. Newer deck is worth more. The cast iron center housings for the blades and the blade spindles I'm told are now obsolete but the new style aluminum housing and spindles fit. Just make sure you check for rust and stress cracks where the dash tower attaches to the frame. If not too thin that can be wire welded and ground down to repair. Good luck and hope this helps you out. Wally

RoX, Get a ser. # off the back left of the axle housing and I can tell you what year it is. I have four 122"s and love them all. There is some little fix-up things I came up with over the year to help you out. There are two different 48" decks that fit on that and I am working on adapting the four gauge wheels to them and getting rid of the round runners. The gauge wheels work much better and keep the mower better leveled. That machine has been around for at least 35 years and could last another 20 or 30.

If properly adjusted a Cub Cadet deck will mow as well or better than anything you can buy brand new. My 127 puts most other tractors i've used to shame as far as cut goes.
be prepared to do a little tinkering though.

Check this site out for help www.ihregistry.com

GOOD LUCK!!! and HAPPY CUBING!!!
