I have a Toro riding mower w/ 8hp B&S engine. When the ignition is turned off, engine stops and gives one loud backfire. Starting and running is fine. Any idea what is causing this backfire? How do I repair it?

Kohler had a problem with its 16HP single doing this. Their fix was to install an electrical solenoid on the idle control. When you turned the key off the venturi plate closed completely. You may try turning the idle down to prevent fuel from charging the cylinder. Just remember not to set the throttle control to full idle until your ready to shut down. Good Luck. Don

Alot of briggs will do this, its in there magnatron ignition. For some reason it seems to let one last spark before stoping. I have replaced points and condenser on engines that had no trouble with back firing until the new ignition was installed. I don't know of a sure way to get rid of the problem, other than getting use to it.

Bob, As with all air-cooled engines be sure you idle it for 3-5 minutes before shutdown after working the engine. This gives the cooling system (air and oil) a chance to dissipate the heat from the head, valves and muffler (air) and from the piston (oil). This is a must for all air-cooled. Then stop the engine from idle speed. You might also try setting the carb very slightly richer, perhaps 1/16 to 1/8 turn, just barely on the rich side of the best full load point. Make sure the ignition is on-spec. I would not suggest choking it off, as this washes down the cylinder with fuel and contributes to oil dilution and wear. Best regards, Fred

this is common on B&S some newer units have a electic fuel shut off to prevent this.

Try pulling the choke just prior to turning ignition off.
