I have a model 170402(7hp side shaft) which I just overhauled. The carb that was on it I accidently stripped all of the threads out of the high idle adjustment hole, so I replaced it with a card off of another 170402 that I had for parts. I put a new rebuild kit in it and set it according to the Briggs manuel. It will then start and run like a top at an idle for 15 to 20 minutes and quit,or you can drive the lawn tractor about a couple hundred yards before it will quit, after it quits it will not start for 30 minutes. Any tech tips are accepted.

My guess is that your engine is starving for fuel. Somewhere between the tank and the carb float bowl there is a restriction so that the fuel flow is not sufficient to run the engine. Over time, though, the float bowl will fill and then the engine will start. When that fuel is consumed the engine stalls, and since the carb is dry, it will not restart. The gas cap could conceivably cause this problem. I just had this trouble with a Kohler; turned out there was a stopup in the fuel shutoff valve.

Problem solved some dirt that was in the gas intake in the carb worked into the bowl and stopped up the jet. runs like a top now

It is the gas cap or the condenser. those the only two options.

After it quits did you check the fire from coil rightaway? as for the cap, tank has to be vented, and the vents in the cap.you might have covered the hole with the gasket. good luck, Ned

It's either the coil or a clogged gas cap vent. It's easy to test. Next time it happens, immediately remove the gas cap. If it starts right back up, it's the cap, if not, it's the coil.

I've checked the gas cap and the fire and it will restart right after it stops but only for less than a minute. It has good spark and is right on time. I've even checked the compression and it has 20 more than stock. I just bought another moter thats on a bad generator for $10 and it ran about a month ago so I got me a new kit for the carb and plan to put it in today. The carb I have was on another moter and it done the same thing with that motor. But I let it sit for 4 years before I even used it again.

Check the Head, it may have alot of carbon build up, since the comp. is higher than normal.
also check for Vapor-Lock. make sure all fuel lines are away from any high heat sourse.

I never thought that it could be the gas cap because I used thermostat gasket material to make a gasket for the tank. I know it not the coil because I replaced it and the points and it has good spark that will bring you to your knees if you grab to the wire. Thanks I'll check the gas cap.
