Did you find and buy a 405 Haban sickle bar mower for your tubeframe?
If not, I have a good one for sale.
In New England , with manual.

I just purchased a Model 405 Haban Sickle mower to install on my G-14 Bolens tractor. Does anyone know where I can get the parts and operators manual? Would appreciate any input.

Andy

I Have a B-10 and would LOVE to find a sickle bar for it. I have a big tractor (Case 411B) that my Dad used to mow the roadsides with. It has a Triumph (now Alamo) all hydraulic sickle bar on it. It does a 6 foot swath. That one will cut about a 2 inch tree.

I picked up a non-running Ford LGT165 a few years ago and included in the deal was a Haban 4' sickle bar attachment. Last year, I decided to mount the mower on my Ford LGT125 which is the same design as the 165. This was one of the greatest surprises I ever had. This mower works absolutely wonderful. It is quiet and practically vibration free. Because it's power is controlled by the electric clutch it works the same as a large tractor with "live" PTO. It will mow 90 deg. vertically and about 45 deg. below grade so it works great for mowing the banks along my driveway: both the "up" side and the "down" side. I mounted a piece of large railroad track on the opposite side as ballast when I mow on side hills. One problem I did have when mowing tall hay was constant winding of the hay in the belt pulley and the bearings of the drive shaft. I devised some "guards" which solved that problem. My mower has the traditional cast iron knife guards; a smaller version of those used on the large farm tractor mowers instead of the flat steel guards I've seen on some smaller sickle mowers. Because of this, it works well in all kinds of briars and it will cut brush up to 3/4" or so if you go at it slowly. The hand lift is a little inconvenient but I am in the process of mounting a small hydraulic lift cylinder which I can run off the Hydrostatic transmission of my little Ford. This is one of the best pieces of equipment I've ever used and it's too bad that Haban has quit making these from what I understand.

Haban is no more! Too bad too, because they had quite a variety of impliments for small tractors. It is my understanding that they sold out, and the new owners did not make any effort to keep or stock the replacement parts. I have seen some look-alike impliments under the AgFab label, which were sold by Quality Farm and Fleet, also now defunct! Buy Haban impliments at your own risk - UNLESS YOU ARE GOOD AT FABRICATING REPAIR PARTS! (I have one of theirs too!)

And..... .I forgot to mention, sickle bar mowers require very little power to run, unlike traditional lawn mowers and brush hogs so they are very economical to use and very easy on the tractor.

They will cut grass, but not brush. They need to have sharp blades, and be adjusted properly to do a good job.

i had a 1968 wheel horse 12hp with a 36in sickle mower on it to mow 3 acres of pasture with and didnot have any problems with it, i took the grass board divder off a old ac chalmbers mower and mounted it on the end of the sickle bar to keep form plugging the bar. it worked fine till i sold the unit when i moved to town. wished i had the unit and all the attachments i had for it back.

Hello everyone,
And Thanks for taking time to reply,it helped me make my mind up to get a sickle bar, I saw an add in a trading paper today it said "looking for bolins parts" so I gave the guy a call and the first thing he wanted to know is if I had a tiller for sale,I told him yes I have a tiller for sale but I would rather trade for a sickle bar and he said he had a sickle bar that he would probably trade,I hope I get it.

Thanks for the help Michael/WV

Thanks wally and Tom for replying,Is it normal that a "garden tractor with a sickle bar" that it would shake the living daylights out of the tractor and operator? Tom did you tractor shake also? Do you think it would cut briers? Best wishes. Michael/WV

Can't really answer the shaking question. Sickle bar mowers for bigger tractors frequently had balancers built into the cutter head to reduce or eliminate the shaking from the reciprocating blade. A sickle mower for a lawn/garden tractor may not have a balancer, or it may not have been installed or set up properly.

You really do not want to try and cut briars with a sickle bar mower. It can be done, but the stuff is like brush, makes a lot of noise and causes frequent breakdowns. Best bet would be Roundup or 2-4D/2-4-5T if you can still get it. If you have a lot of this, you might want to go to a rental place once a year and rent a bigger tractor with brush mower.

Sickle bar mowers work well in weeds, I used to have problems with fine grass building up . I used to use an allis chalmers B to cut small brush and carried a hand saw to cut larger trees. I later saw an article in a farm magazine that told about a person using the same method to clear land for planting.
