How do the newer B&S OHV single cylinder engines of around 5 or 6 hp compare with their older side valve engines? are they better engines on the whole, how do they compare reliabilty wise?
Thanks in advance
Roy.

I own three Briggs Intek OHV engines.....A 6 horsepower horizontal on a pressure washer, a 7 horsepower on a tiller, and a 22 horsepower on my Craftsman tractor. Great engines. Quiet. powerful, start on the first pull/crank. Seem to be easier on fuel than L-heads were. My only gripe is this....on both of the smaller engines, the valve covers started leaking like crazy. Replaced the gaskets, started leaking again. Found that Briggs changed the design of the valve cover, so I got the newer type. So far, so good. The 22 horsepower V-Twin Intek ELS doesn't have enough hours on it to see if it has the valve cover problem yet. I am a rabid Briggs fan, so that is about all I own. I do have a Tecumseh on a chipper that I bought used. I runs good, but blows oil like crazy. When it craps out, it will get a 6 horse Intek. I liked the old L-heads and have several still in service. Regards..... ..P

Roy, its my understanding that they run more quiet and with better fuel economy. Also better equipped to meet EPA regulations (air pollution) here in the USA.

Steven is correct in his statements but as a shop owner I can safely tell you they require more maintenance ie frequent valve adjustments. Furthermore they have a higher degree of valve train failure then the old L head motors. Personally I am sorry to see the old L heads go but they are no longer in production for most sizes and the rest are scheduled to be phased out if they haven't been already.

I thought as much.... I was talking to a guy the other day who has a friend that works with mower engines, and apparently that particular make of engine these days is often refered to as "Briggs and Scrap 'em!"

Alot of the Valve Train problems would never happen if the valves, Was kept adjusted to specs than being ran for hours on end. With to wide of a lash. That beats the snot out of the Rocker arms,Cam Lobes,Rocker shaft ect.

Can some one tell me what the intake and exhaust valve clearance (cold) should be set at on a 14.5hp Briggs engine? - Thanks Roger
