I have a 20 HP 48 inch cut Scotts mower made by John Deere and it will not move. The engine runs find, the brake is off, and the transmission disengaging rod is all the way in but it won't engage the automatic transmission. The only thing I did was removed the back tire because it was flat and had it fixed. Is there something I should of done when I but the tire back on? I checked the transmisson fluid and filled it to FULL but it still won't move. Please help!!!!!

RE: Scotts by Deere tranny problem: we had similar problem ie. engine ran well, deck mowed, but the tractor just wouldn't MOVE! We couldn't get the shifter out of neutral, and thought something must be wrong inside the (sealed) Tuff-Torque tranny (and too cheap to buy another one for $500.).
JD authorized repair shop helped out via email, noted that setting the parking-brake "locks" the shifter lever, and that the parking brake lever can get (1) broken, or (2) bent (so that the handle looks like it's "OFF" but really isn't). This fixed our problem, runs great now!

Lucas,

I took everybody's advice and bought the square stock key metal from the John Deere dealer. You were right my key is missing. There is a slot in the axle and a very shallow slot in the middle of the hub. The square key rod I bought will not work, it is too big. I pull off the other hub and it a key inside the middle of the hub. I cannot get it out but it is tapered on one side and straight (I think the cross section is rectangle in shape and not square) on the other side. Not sure if it is a permanent part of the hub but if that was case it would not be missing from the other hub. I talked to the John Deere dealer and he said he sees the slot in the axle when viewing a breakdown of it on his computer but there is no key pictured or called out in the parts list so he gave me a standard square stock which doesn't work. Any suggestions?

Craig

If it was fine before you removed the tire, then probably all you did was lose the little square axle key. Its probably laying in the ground near where you removed and installed the wheel. Its about 2 inches long. fits in the groove of the wheel and axle. Any hardware store should have it in bulk lengths. As would most tractor and mower repair shops. Its not that expensive. If you need one to match it to, you can always remove the other wheel and get that one to take with you. Jut make sure you put both back in when you put the wheels back on.

What model scotts do you have? The HP and Deck size which is on the hood is all I need. I work for a JD dealer, so I'll check it at work myself. It might have had a woodruff key maybe..

The other thing is the keystock often has a coating on it to prevent rust, and it makes it fit tight in the grooves. Probably gold colored. I sand the sides and corners a little (until the gold coating is gone) with sand paper before installing them so they fit easily, and use grease or never sieze so the wheels don't get rusted to the axle.

Joe in Pa,

I bought mine in 1999 from Home Depot. It is model S2048. If you look at the gas tank their is hole through it so you can see the transmission oil level reservoir. If you move your seat all the up you will see the oil fill reservoir cap.

woops! Mine is a s2046. Its different. Its a sealed unit. My dealer said that you can't check or add fluid and my manual says nothing about the transmission. I think that sucks!

if you are looking at the key from the side and it appears tapered it could be an woodroof key and is removed by taping it with a punch and ball peen hammer on the flat side toward the shaft it should begin to rotate out of the shaft as its bottom is a radious good luck ron
