Hey guys; my son has a 14hp vanguard(horizontal shaft) in a Max 6 wheeler ATV. Same basic engine I believe as the 16hp model. Cannot get thre engine to keep running smoothly. Runs for a while, the has to adjust needle valve or use choke to run; runs a little more then has to adjust all over again. He has blown out lines, removed and cleaned tank(found some drill filings which were apparently left in after mfg. drilled holes for lines). The engine is equipped with a Mikuni fuel pump. Any suggestions are most welcome! Question: Why is there only 1 adjusting needle screw on the carb?

If you have to keep adjusting the carb, there is a restriction in the fuel system, if adjusting helps for a while,it sounds like a problem in the carb. Try the easy things first remove the bowl and clean out, check for any water in the system you will be able to see the water in fuel it will sink to the very bottom of the bowl the small engines will not run right with any amount of water in the carb. Next check the main jet for any dirt or restriction. When you take the bowl off make sure that it is full of fuel. I'll check back to see if this helps at all.
