I'm putting a new engine on my 448 and will be going for the highest HP engine of whichever brand I pick. I probably will use an electric clutch and still use the left hand discharge 60" deck. Any advise from anyone who has put a different motor on their similar Case? I'm thinking of running a pulley belt drive to the hydraulic pump instead of the under dash mount it was from the factory. How about running a small electric fan on the oil cooler instead of the factory setup with the mechanical clutch? Thank you for your input and advise.

In my opinion just looking at what motor will last longest, i'd pick Honda first, Vanguard second. After that, it depends on which model, "with in" the brands mentioned. If it was for me and i wanted it to last, i'd get a Honda motor and be willing to pay a lot more for it! Robert

If you want to buy a Honda engine cheaper than probably anywhere else try Northerntool.com ....I think they ship anywhere in the U.S. They have retail stores in and around the Minnesota area and also South Carolina. I found my spare electric clutch and it is for a 1" shaft so that leaves me to only the Vanguard unless I have a crank machined down to 1'". I put a 16hp Vanguard in my Toro 117 groundsmaster last summer. The engine is not smooth unless its at full throttle. I have a lawn service that I do part time. There is a big spot of leaked oil under where it sat this winter. Though I admit I only changed the oil 2 times last year putting 10-15 hours on it a week.

Why do you want to belt drive pump, these pumps are easy to put on any engine.
I have a 1978 444 that I put a 2 cylinder water cooled perkins engine in,using original pupm hooked up basicly the same.
I use an eletric fan for cooling also.

If I go with for example, a Vanguard 23hp then I would be running everything off one end of the crankshaft. I know that would have the engine turned around from the original Onans position. I have figured out a way to still run the belt in the right rotation to my left hand 60" deck. If Northerntool.com sold Perkins engines and they weren't too much more than a 24hp Onan then I would buy one of them. Northern has a payment plan that I can buy a motor on my check card and divide the payments over 6 months. I have a lawn service that I run part-time and would be using this 448 in it. I foresee running multiple attachments on it say for doing fall cleanups.
