I'm going to buy a new lawn tractor. Had a Sears, not going to buy another one of those. The three choices are:

Husqvnara 18hp
Cub Cadet 18hp
Troy Built 18hp

There all about the same price range, they all can do the same work. Just need something to last. Any suggestions?

Thanks for all the GOOD input. I purchase a Cub 2186, the saleman gave me a better deal then any place else. Cub was offering a cash back deal and then he took an additional amount off. So hopefully I got a good mower for under $2500.00. I wish I could have found that JD for under $2500.00 that someone posted, but all the JD at the dealers here were $4299.00 and up. So thanks again for all the good advice.

Al, you got a few good suggestions, and I'm a diehard Cub owner but unless you have your heart set on a new machine, look for a clean used Cub like the 682,782,or the 1810/1811. Parts are still available plus if you need a new mower deck housing, they run about $400 but will last 20 years if you keep them clean. Also, a JD318 is a fantastic machine and they go for $2000-$3000 used but 10 years from now you will probably get that back if you sell it.

I would go with a Troy built just because few other people have them, so you would be different

I suggest looking for a Cub Cadet 782. It's a 17hp hydro. Good, solid tractor; built like a tank and parts are still available.

I also echo the comment below about the CC 1710. I used one for a while when I worked for an electric utility. It was 'run hard and put away wet' on more than one occasion by more than one operator. Only problem we had with it was the boss for the carb butterfly shaft was worn out. Replaced the carb, no more problems. If memory serves, the 1710 is a descendent of the above-mentioned CC 782, too. Keep the hydro oil and filter changed and you will be in good shape.

Don't know which 18hp Cub you're looking at, but if it is a 1000-series, it is a dressed-up Troy-Bilt/Yard Machines with belt drive. If you want shaft-drive in a new CC, you have to look at a minimum of a 2000-series Cub. Belts are ok, but I like shaft-drive much better. HTH

Yea these are nice tractors I like the 4000 series. Case alway was a good tractor. These are expensive, out of my price range. I could retire the 8N if I could afford one of these, and the old Ford runs to good to retire.

Thanks for the reply

Al,
Never bought a new one before. Always bought used. Too pricey for my wallet. However, excellent used machines are available and fairly inexpensive. Just my 2 cents worth.

Of the three you have presented the Husqavarna looks the best with the cast front axle and the Kawasaki V-Twin OHV FH451V engine. I would rather select a tractor which has bolt-on rear wheels than one where the entire hub has to be removed to service the rear tire. My two cents.

Nothing runs like a deere in the headlghts. So, keep that in mind. They don't even make their own machines anymore, anyway. The real question is how much lawn do you need to mow? And how tall will the grass be before you mow it regularly? Where will you get parts from? A JD 80 / 5620 will mow any grass you have if you have the money. Maybe a Farmall Cub or Farmall 100 will be fine. Parts, implements and local service are major items.

Later.

I really like the Toro, But here they are just as expensive as a JD. Plus the one I priced, only had a 15hp motor about $4000.00 plus you had to purchase the desk. I like the tractor just can't afford. Already have an 8n the grandkids can restore in about 20 years. Tractor over 53 years old and still runs to good to let anyone touch.

Thanks for your reply

"only had a 15hp motor"
Al ya' can go to Sears , Lowes or what ever chain store and buy the smallest tractor and it will have at least a 16 horse power engine ..... then hook a chain from the rear end of the 16 hp chain store tractor to the buisness end of the "only" 15 hp Wheel Horse and see what happens ..... . it's all in the gears ! Wheel Horse has used the same basic design since 1961 ... it works , it's simple and it lasts ! A working garden tractor after 30 years ..... it is not uncommon with a Wheel Horse , divide the $4000 into 30 years .... that's 'bout $134 bucks a year for a real garden tractor !
Good Luck on what ever you choose !:^)

One "big" point i noticed is that my old Wheel Horse will go on side hills with out spinning where the newer tractors just spin and grab. I do all my grass mowing these days with a Grasshopper 721-d, but of the wanna-b-mowers, the WH is hard to beat! I'd rather have a "used" WH 8 speed than a new cheapo mower any day!!! A nice used WH 8 speed will out last the new cheaper mowers made today!! If needed they are easy to work on, and have "less" spl. parts than the other wanna-b-mowers. Robert

Mowing grass while having both hands occupied isnt the American way. You have to have a hand available for a nice cold brew. That is why I love my JD 210. It is so nice and heavy making it so smooth of a ride that my beer doesnt foam up unlike when I borrowed my buddy's newer Crapsman. It had a nice Briggs twin on it but that was about the only thing. Had to use both hands to steer and was so bouncy I couldnt really drink my beer without spilling it all over the place. Just a food for thought!!!

You obviously "haven't" ever driven a Grasshopper! I can mow one handed, no problem at all, and so can the other Grasshopper owners from what i hear on other forums! Non GH owners keep repeating this "two handed thing" with out ever trying one for them selves!! I like to try a machine or tool, before i get too opinioated about it, and yes i've mowed with other brands of zero turn mowers. Robert

I think that the Simplicity tractors are quite good. I know of two guys that own them and they are a solid machine both bought new and over 15 years old.

One that runs....got a new motor on my wheelhorse now daburn wires melted down, going to have to replace wiring.

Dad has a 1710 Cub Cadet with 17 hp Kohler hydrostatic, several years old, been real good. Only thing I would change is the hydrostatic for gears.
