I have an 18 hp briggs & straton in my craftsman lawn tractor. The only way I can get it started, and keep it running, is to completely close the choke AND cover the small hole in the choke itself. If I let up on the hole the engine starts to die but will keep running if I once again cover the hole. I've changed all of the normal stuff - fuel filter, plugs, etc. Even overhauled the fuel "pump", adjusted all the available screws, mixture, idle, etc. but it no success. ANY IDEAS? Help!

Check the throttle shaft for looseness within the carburetor. If there is loseness, you are sucking in air and the throttle shaft needs to replaced.

You will need to rebuild the carb. The jets are stopped up.

Usually if you have to close the choke that much its getting air from some where else to run. Check for vacuum leaks.
