I have a cub cadet 2185 purchased in spring of 97, 2 years ago it started overheating to the point that the muffler was glowing red hot. Flames started coming out of the muffler, but not through the opening but a breach in the side of the muffler, apparently the muffler was clogged. Anyway, dealer replaced muffler assembly, but could not find the culprit. The machine runs good for about 2 hrs and then shuts down (overheats) after about 2 hrs and is about to be pushed over the ravine. New fuel filter, good oil, cleaned engine. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

What motor? We don't work on Cubs, so I don't know what's in a 2185. We do work on Deere and Simplicity, so I've probably seen your engine in one of those. Usually, red hot mufflers and flames are an indication of exhaust valves that don't seal. If the exhaust valve doesn't seal when closed, the engine blows more fire than normal into the muffler, heating it up. Unfortunately, with the compression release mechanisms engines have these days, you can't pinpoint this problem with a compression test, you have to tear the motor down and look. Or at least check the tappet clearance on the exhaust valves, to see if there is any.

Which one Stan? Magnum or Command? The Magnums were opposed twins, the Commands are V twins. Model number will also tell you. Magnum numbers start with M, Commands start with C.
