Does anyone have any knowledge of the B&S ELS engine? I am considering a Huskee GT (from Tractor Supply Company) with a 23HP ELS engine, automatic foot pedal transmission, and a 46" mowing deck, but I have not seen this engine before. It is supposedly better than the Intek. Any info would be great. Seems like a pretty good deal for $1,600 less 10%.

I have a 22 horsepower Briggs Intek ELS on my Craftsman tractor. My tractor has a 46 inch deck, ag tires with 100 (?) pound weights. Mine has gobs of power, runs smoothly and quietly and uses less fuel than my friend's 15 horse Kohler. It starts easily. My only gripe is the rinky-dink "no tools" oil drain setup. The stupid little valve would never seal properly, and leaked oil all over the deck. And, to change the oil, I always had to remove the deck, as there was little room for my drain pan. So I rigged up a different drain arrangement that lets me put the pan at the side of the tractor, and threw that stupid "no tools" valve across the road. My thinking is that this arrangement was probably a Craftsman exclusive, and that your tractor may not be plagued with it. I am a Briggs man to the bone, and have several in sevice, some of which are 40 years old and still going strong. One major thing to consider with the Intek engines is to run 30 weight oil in the summer. They tend to use oil when running multi-weight oil. Multi-weight is fine for cold weather, however. The ELS engines are Inteks, and have certain heavy duty features like cast cylinder liners and some have valve rotators. They have pressure lube with oil filters. I have a couple single-cylinder Inteks that I have had problems with the valve covers leaking on. Briggs has updated the valve covers, and so far, this has solved the problem. My ELS has not had this problem yet. It is not quite a year old, so time will tell. Mine has a two barrel carb and even has a catalytic converter. What will they think of next. Good luck with your decision. You will really enjoy the smooth power of your "Extended Life Series" engine. Regards...P
