A friend of mine has a Deutz/Allis Model 612 that needs a carb rebuild. It apparently has a 12 HP Briggs & Stratton motor. Does anyone know where to get a carb kit? Also, she was told the compression tested about 25 pounds low, (but my understanding is that was done without the motor running) is that compression still acceptable? Can you still get these motors, and if so, are they worth buying or is there some other motor that will fit without a lot of modifications? Any other suggestions about where to get parts for the motor or the tractor would be very appreciated. She would like to restore the tractor if possible. Thanks in advance for your help.

Briggs carb kit part #394698 available at any Briggs & Stratton dealer. (Pretty much any lawnmower shop, although they may have to order it if they don't do a lot of tractor work). On your compression, it depends. If the compression is really only 25 lbs low, no big deal. If they meant there's only 25 lbs compression, then either the valves don't seal or the cylinder is worn out. In that case, it's either short block or new motor time, both of which your friendly, neighborhood dealer can help you with.
Best bet is to replace engine with the same type. It's a lot of work to go to something completely different. As far as parts for the rest of the tractor, find a Simplicity dealer. A Deutz Allis 612 is really a Simplicity 4212 in disguise.
