I have a nice small 12hp Briggs - horizontal piston, vertical crank.

My engine's crank case is filled with gas (sad). I was having trouble with it last fall flooding easily, and I replaced the carb over the winter. I filled up the tank, but it didn't start. I then replaced the spark plug and checked for a good spark. Everything ok there. Only I found that most of the gas ended up in the crank case- possibly due to excessive attempted starts. I thought I might have had a bad valve, so I pulled the head. Only to find a nice smooth bore, and two functioning valves. It seems to have good compression via turning the fly wheel (although I haven't pressure tested). I'm glad to see everything in "good" order, but I'm still perplexed as to why the gas in the crank case? Thank you in advance for your help. -Doug Bradley novice motor enthusiast

Doug, I had the same problem with a KT-17 Kohler. My problem was caused by a bad diaphragm in the fuel pump. I don't know the layout of your engine, but mine has the gas tank above the carb and fuel pump, so the leaking diaphragm was letting the gas leak into the crankcase. I have heard of engines without a fuel pump doing the same thing when the float sticks open in the carburator. Make sure you drain the crankcase well and let the fumes disperse before you start the engine. I replaced the diaphragm, but I also added a fuel shutoff valve in the gas line before the fuel pump to make sure it didn't happen again.
Good luck, hope this helps. Mark R.

The fuel shutoff is a sure way to keep the fuel in the tank during shutdown. I added a shutoff to mine.

I just got the deal of the century because a briggs 16.5 leaked gas into the crankcase. It may have been caused by the float pin having a little dirt in it. Anyway it filled the crankcase and caused the engine not to turn over. The owner sold it at a yard sale to me for $30. I drained the fuel changed the oil three times to make sure it was clean and off we mowed.. Just a happy buyer
