Bolens / Kohler engine problem

I have a recently aquired Bolens 1886 with a big Kohler engine. It is a great tractor so far but I am having a problem. If the tractor sits very long gas runs out of the tank and into the left cylinder and fills the cylinder up until the tractor will not turn over. I then have to take the spark plugs out and blow the gas out and then try to start it. If it sits for a week or so it will fill up the entire crankcase with gas and then it will not start. I am assuming the gas is going through the carb somehow and in the intake valve, but isnt there supposed to be something that stops that from happening??? Do I need to rebuild the carb or is there something else I can do. I have started turning off the fuel tank now every time I stop it and will see how that goes.

I am not very knowledgable with these Kohlers or the Bolens for that matter, I think that is the reason I ended up with this tractor, because it has this problem. Any help please????

Shep, I was just talking to a guy this weekend and told me he had the same problem. He went to a boat shop and got a check valve that goes in the fuel line and shuts the fuel off when the pump stops working. I'm going to try and find one to see how good it works.

Shouldnt have to rebuild, but just clean it. The needle isnt seating properly causing flow through the carb into the breather assy and into the crankcase. Thats a good thing it has a shutoff cause I was going to recommend you do that

There is a needle just behind the breather assy on top, I played with that a little, but it didnt do much, is that the one that needs cleaning maybe??? I will blow some cleaner through it the next time I have it out and see if that helps, thanks....

Shep, I enjoy you Oliver knowhow on the web, so I'll give you some Kohler info. Pull the carb off and check the float. I have been getting a bunch in lately with pinholes and taking on fuel. New floats are about $5 and a gasket and needle kit about $8. The needle that goes thru the center of the carb is the high speed mixture and the little one on top that is on an angle or just above the fuel bowl is idle mixture screw. Just pretend it's and undersized 1550 carb.
