after just paying 500 bucks for a new carburetor and adjustment, now my electric clutch that engages the blades for the mower on my sears kohler garden tractor has apparently gone out.

any ideas out there what could be wrong? if it is the clutch, is there a fuse or something? what does an engagement switch like this run? thanks folks

Mower switches could be $30 or so. Maybe a broken wire at the clutch connector, or corroded connection there. Does the clutch make any sound when you throw the switch? Or just put 12 volts on the clutch wires to bypass the switch. If there's sound, then the clutch could be out of adjustment; there may be three screws on it to adjust it. My tractor had been sitting in the weather for 3-4 years when I got it. The wire was broken at the clutch connector and the switch was bad/corroded. Since the switch is not repairable, I took it apart, cleaned the corrosion, lubed it and reassembled it (about three times before I got it right). It works fine now.

$500 for a carb and adjustment? I want to be your mech! First off check for power through the switch to include the fuse. Then check the rest of the system. The easiest way is to unplug it at the clutch and see if you have power there (you have to bypass the seat safety switch to do this with a jumper wire or have someone sit on while doing the test)(get a test light or multimeter). If there is power to the clutch then it's a clutch problem. Has be my experience that one of the switches will be bad. Start by checking backwards from the clutch. If it is the clutch find a different mechanic. I can get almost any carb I want for under $200. And even a quadarjet (4 barrel GM) with installation (which includes adjustment in the flat rate manual) doesn't run $500.
