Craftsman string trimmer won't rev

Sometimes it starts and runs fine, but usually starts but won't rev up to full speed, just runs at a speed that would be about 1/4 throttle, even though I'm holding the throttle wide open. Pumping the priming bulb will sometimes rev it up, but it quickly goes back to lower speed. Sometimes when using it at the lower speed, it will suddenly rev up to normal operating speed, might stay there for 10 seconds or 10 minutes. I've had it apart, but everything looks normal. choke plate seems to work as it should. The random nature of this problem has me stumped. Any ideas?

`When you took the muffler off, did you check the exhaust port in the block? If that is blocked with carbon could cause problems. We had a fellow bring his trimmer into our shop a while ago, couldn't get it started. Dad tried pulling on it a couple of times to see what the story was, and at the same time I walked by and noticed the outlet on the muffler port was plugged up with a wasp nest. Cleaned that out and it fired right up.

could be old gas mix ,wrong gas oil mix ratio air filter clogged, air adjust needs to be set, bad spark plug. sounds more like mix ratio problem, or its not getting air to ignite the gas.

Check the fuel cap, fuel filter, and the screen in the carb. Good luck: MJM

Check your muffler.Sounds like the spark arrester screen is pluged with carbon.Clean the screen or replace it,you can run the trimmer without the screen to see if thats the problem but then replace.

Thanks, I hadn't thought of checking the muffler. However, I did, and it was cleaner inside than on the outside. Didn't affect the problem at all.
