I recently replaced the air filter on my 87 318 when I put it back together I can only get it to run with the choke half way out. Any ideas?

I've had a similar problem on a 518 wheel horse. I think it's a small piece of dirt covering an air bleed hole in the top of the carb. I just use an air gun and some carb cleaner in the top of the carb. If you blow gas gas all over, I'd let it dry out before turning the key. I had this happen last week after changing air filter & a couple years ago.

Assumimg the choke linkage is properly adjusted, if it will only run on half choke, it is indicating that you are not getting enough gasoline with the choke open. Could be that the carburetor was previously adjusted with a partially clogged filter.

Randy - It's possible, when changing the air filter, some material dropped into the carb. It would not take much. If that did occur, it would explain the need to partially deploy the choke. That would most likely, require taking the carb off the machine, disassembling it, cleaning, and reassembling. I'd not want to start on that project without first check a few other things.

First, I'd check that when the coke is pulled out, that it completely covers the carb opening. Also, when fully depressed, the carb opening is fully "open". Your choke cable could be out of adjustment and that when you have the choke knob partially out, the choke itself is actually where it would normally be when the choke knob is fully depressed. There is a screw that captures the cable, either on or near the carb (depending on the model year).

The idle mixture screw on the carb could be out of adjustment. If there is a limiter cap on the screw, you may have to carefully pry it off to make the adjustment. The idle mixture screw should be clockwise until "lightly" seated. Then turn it counter-clockwise 1-1/4 turns.

Replace the limiter cap (if you had one). Start the engine and let it warm up fully. Set the throttle to slow idle. If you have a tach (most of us don't) you'll need to set the rpm to 1250. Next, turn the idle mixture screw "in" until the rpm drops, then back out till engine speed increases and then drops again. Adjust to the highest rpm between drops and then back out 1/8 turn.

Good luck. - Dave

See if something may have fallen into the carb. throat when you were changing the air filter. Could be something, jamming the choke or blocking the flow of air. Check the linkage, to see if it is jamming.

You don't say if it surges without the choke on or if it shuts off. Had my neighbors in last year that would surge under 1/2 throttle and would stall at idle. Found near bottom of carb is a soft plug that covers the drilled passage for the idle mixture screw that fell off. Found it laying on block under carb and put it back on and sealed it with a dab of silicone sealer and its been fine ever since.
