3.5 hp briggs won't fire

I have a what I think is a 3.5hp briggs and stratton that won't fire. It has a brand new spark plug so that ain't the problem.

The two most likely causes for this engine not to fire are a sheared flywheel key or a bad coil. Pull the flywheel and check the key. If sheared, be sure to use a flywheel key as replacment, not a regular steel key.

If your engine is the vertical shaft type, you can use a coil from a late model engine (vertical shaft, made in the last 5 years or so. Just cut the wires leading under the flywheel, but not the ground shutoff wire from the coil. Set the air gap to the thickness of a regulation postcard. This is the gap between the coil legs and the magnetic part of the flywheel! If you must be technical, set the gap to .010. Put it back together and it'll run until you forget to check the oil, or you shut it off manually!
