OK I know this should prove interesting, so I thought I'd go ahead and post.... I have a mower deck for a Sears Custom that is made from cast aluminiun, (or cast zinc???) that has cracks in it, and was wondering how it should be welded...
Thanks in advance
Adam

I have to weld a big hole in my exhaust manifold of my marine engine. The hole is about two centimeter of diameter and 5 mm deep What material do you recommend ?

If I use a MIG welding machine what type of material do you recommend.

thanks in advance and I appreciate your recommendations.

Leonardo

Guess my first answer didn't post. If the deck is from the early '70's it's aluminum. I have a sears catalog from 1970 that descibes the decks as aluminum. i saw an info-mercial over the weekend about alumaloy. Use with a propane torch to minimize distortion, heat til rod flows looks good but haven't tried it. alumaloy.net has more info. I think it was around $50

Bob,
Yes I have some of those rods or similiar. I got mine at Home Depot by Bernzomatic. About 1.00 or so each in a pack of 3, and melt with a propane torch. They seem to work great. Not as strong as mig or something like that though. I had forgotten about them, thanks for reminding me.

It can be tig or mig'd. Grind it smooth, preheat it and weld it. Only prob with Al, is it conducts heat so well, the heat from preheat and welding would prolly work its way to the spindles and toast the bearings. I think the spindles and rollers would have to be removed. My .02
