Fuel Shut Off Solenoid

I am having a great deal of difficulty starting my Kohler CV-13. I can crank and crank the engine and it will not fire. It will then begin to fire and cough and sputter. If I get lucky, the mower will start and run for an hour or so. Then it will begin to cough and sputter and die.

It is equipped with the optional fuel shut off solenoid. I took the solenoid off the carb and turned the key with the wires still connected. The engine cranked but the solenoid did nothing. First, can the solenoid be tested this way? Second, is it possible that my solenoid is working sporadically? Finally, can I just replace the optional solenoid with a fuel bowl screw? I can live with the backfire. I don't want to pay the 80 bucks for a new solenoid.

$80 for a fuel shut-off solenoid? I figured about $25-30 for the one on my B&S 16hp 2 cyl. I had to run with the choke 1/2 out, and thought it was an out of adjustment carb float. I pulled the shutoff solenoid to remove the fuel bowl. As long as it was off, I decided to test it. Guess what? No power, and I could blow thru it, but not much. Ignition on, grounded, and I could still blow thru it, but not much. No power and it should be closed; ignition on and it should be open to let fuel flow. I put some PB Blaster in it, turned on the ignition (no cranking) and grounded the solenoid case. Now I could hear a slight click. Removed from ground, another slight click. Grounded and ungrounded case another dozen or two times with a couple more shots of PB Blaster, and it worked like new. Full open with ignition on and fully closed with ignition off. The engine runs like new, idles smooth, and no choke necessary. The whole problem was insufficient fuel supply caused by a stuck fuel shutoff solenoid. I'll keep the $30, er, I mean $80 in my pocket.

The solenoid needs to be grounded when you test it so if you were holding it away from the mower it wouldn't do anything. As for the operation of the solenoid when there is power to it it should move down. When you turn the key off it should spring up. It is possible that it is going bad and shutting off the fuel but usually they either work or dont work. I would be more inclined to believe that there is junk in the carb that is plugging up the passages. As far as replacing it with a plug it most likely won't work you would need a needle style main jet.

Just unscrew the soleniod, cut the rod off flush, screw it back in carb, and cap the hot wire to it.
let it idle for a few sec. before turning off.

Since that needle is designed to help control the amount of fuel entering the main jet circut on the carburetor I am thinking cutting it off is NOT such a wise idea. (Although I will admit I have never tried it). If you get a good carb kit, it will have a main jet in it. Also if you are going to clean the carb you would need the kit for the gaskets etc. May as well do it correctly the first time.
