Briggs & Straton 12HP Riding Mower won't start 05/14/03 10:18 PM Edit Reply

I've got a Brigg & Straton 12HP "Quiet Rider I/C" engine. Model number is 283707, Type is 0136 01. I threw a rod in the engine. After replacing the rod & all other associated pieces, we couldn't get it to crank. It would turn over but wouldn't crank. Found out that we weren't getting any spark. We messed with the wiring & somehow starting getting a spark. The engine still wouldn't crank. We removed the spark plug & poured some gas in there. The engine then cranked and ran for a day. Now it won't start again. We've pulled the plug & tried pouring gas back in, but no dice. Could it be electrical or is it something else? We are still getting a spark, but it won't crank
Please help.
Thanks,
Guy

it sounds like th carborator has a problem with it. might check it and see if anything is clogged that wont get the fuel into the engine.i had the same problem before and it was the carborator that was the problem.

When you say it won't crank do you mean it won't turn over or it won't fire? If it is turning over and you are getting good spark there are only a couple of possibilities. 1. Fuel delivery problem. 2. Timing issue (sheared flywheel key. and if the flywheel wasn't properly torqued down that could definatly be the issue) 3. Compression loss either due to a valve issue or possibly head gasket problem.

i ve got a brigs with probably a sheared key , ,sometimes they just move enough ,as they are soft to make it pop back thru the carb but not srart , any way, taking thr dohicke with the 6 ball bearings off that controls the one way motion for the pull rope has always given me a proplem , mostly because of three things , i ve only done it a few times far apart , i never remember if it s reverse tread , and i always end up breaking a fin or the little ears on the guard , so here i am again , trying to remember , is it reverse tread? got to get the thing off so i can pull the hub to replace the key , , thanks , jim

i had a simular problem with the exception of my mower had a valve seat come loose and cause the valve to hang therefore causing it to have vertially no compression! at least thats what my mower mechanic said. He fixed it in less than 45 minutes..... ...good luck!
